Hometown: London, England
I am a passionate open water swimmer. I have swum all my life and in the last five years have become particularly interested in outdoor swimming.
I have completed a two person channel relay (Nivarna Seas, 4th July 2009, 11hrs 14minutes) and a solo 26 mile swim in Loch Lomond (28th/29th August 2010, 12hrs).
I swim outdoors everyday, here in the US in the Potomac River, in the UK in a swimming pond by my house and the Parliament Hill Lido. For the last four years i have swum throughout the winter - water temperature dropping to 2 degrees on some days.
To train for the Channel and Loch Lomond I regularly spent weekends in Dover doing repetitive 5 hour swims, swimming an average of 21 kilometers per session. The training in Dover has made me very familiar and comfortable with swimming in rough waters. I have also done x3 12kilometer swims in the Thames from Oxford to Abingdon, swimming with, at at times, against, the current. These three swims have helped me perfect my training in waters with strong tidal currents.
After completing the Loch Lomond swim i continued to train outdoors and did regular 5 hour swims in the lido, for pleasure.
In May of 2011 I moved to the United States, since being here I have joined the Reston Masters Swimming Team who train for 1.45hr at a time covering an average of 6.5kilometers a session.
I also swim on my own in the Potomac river and at the Claude Moore Recreation Centre
I have swum the Little Red Lighthouse Swim, Coney Island Swim and the round the sound Bermuda swim since being in the States.
When I return to the UK later in the year I will continue my outdoor swimming training routine, 2hrs every morning, whilst also rejoining my Masters swimming club, Camden Swiss Cottage with whom I train 5 times a week.
I have long been interested in taking part in the Manhattan Marathon Swim; since swimming the Channel and Loch Lomond it has become my passion and something I am desperate to do. Whilst living in the Washington DC area, I have made regular trips to New York and have tested the waters of the Hudson or East River every time. I can't think of a better way to get to know the city than swimming all the way around it! I will be doing this swim for charity but will be paying the entry fee myself.
With regards to people crewing the MIMS for me, Nari swam the English Channel with me and crewed for me on the Loch Lomond swim. She has swum with me for five years and has observed and trained with me for every outdoor swim i've done. I could't have done the Loch Lomond swim without her. She will be the perfect crew member for the MIMS. Jenny Brown is a triathlete and, since moving to the States, is someone I have trained with regularly. She swam the Colney Island 5k and Bermuda Round the Sound swims with me. A long term athlete herself she understands the challenge of the MIMS and will be an ideal crew member.
