About Matt

Matt recently learned his surname is an aquatic term, which delighted him. "Gurry" is the Welsh word for "fishing offal," meaning "leftover fish guts." With such promising coincidence, he was destined for open water swimming. A bumbling novice, Matt began swimming in 2007. Years earlier, he paddled with the Downtown Boathouse and supported NYC Swim's events. In 2007, he got the idea to participate as a swimmer and jumped into a pool. That summer, he swam the Brooklyn Bridge Swim to favorable results. Now a member of USMS club Team New York Aquatics, he finds himself stuck with a wet, time-consuming habit. Matt lives on the Lower East Side.
