Join us for an informal gathering of paddlers from 8:30AM to 10:00AM to share skills and experiences to support a safe and successful swim race. Come prepared to get wet and have fun--we will practice assisted rescues.
The actual hands on session will follow the swim portion of the Aquathlon. The Aquathlon will serve as an excellent warm-up, before the hands on Manhattan Island Marathon Swim paddling session begins at 8:30AM.
Please be sure to bring a change of clothes, towel, hat, sunscreen, water, VHF radio, any cold-water gear you may have, and your usual boat gear. We will try to have some extra materials on hand but if you have it please bring it.
For those new to or considering kayak swim support for the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim, please download the safety briefing presentation from the 2010 race for additional information.
| Date: | 06/16/2012 (Saturday) | | Start: | | 8:30 AM | West side of Randall's Island Park, on the sandy beach across from East 109th Street. | (show) (hide) Directions to Start: | Randall’s Island Park sits between Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens on Wards and Randall’s Islands. Check-in for the race, the swim start/finish, and run transition are all located on Wards Island within Randall's Island Park, across from Manhattan's East 109th Street (GPS coordinates: 40.789447,-73.932289), just a few blocks north of the footbridge from Manhattan. Access to the islands is via this 103rd Street Footbridge (pedestrians and bicycles only) or the RFK/Triboro Bridge (buses, cars, pedestrians, and bicycles). Click here for directions by car, transit, bike, or walking using Google maps.
If you are not familiar with the area, we strongly suggest that you print and bring this island map, which has Aquathlon locations and parking highlighted. The 103rd Street Footbridge is scheduled to open on June 1. Please check back closer to race day for any status updates.
By Subway:
6 to 103rd Street, then walk east along 102nd Street to the footbridge over the FDR Drive, which connects to the 103rd Street Footbridge. After crossing over to Randall's Island Park, turn left and go north along the waterfront for a few blocks. Check www.mta.info for schedule information.
By Bus:
From the West Side, take the M96 bus, which goes across town from West 96th Street. Check www.mta.info for schedule information. Exit at First Avenue and 97th Street and then walk north to 102nd Street and turn right for the footbridge over the FDR Drive, which connects to the 103rd Street Footbridge.
From the East Side, take the M15 bus running north on First Avenue or south on Second Avenue and ask the driver to let you off as close to 102nd Street as possible. Check www.mta.info for schedule information. Go east to the FDR drive and take the footbridge first over FDR Drive and then the 103rd Street Footbridge.
The M35 bus serves Randall’s Island Park from the northwest corner of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in Harlem, which is right at the 4/5/6 subway stop and a block east of the 125th Street Metro-North Railroad Station. Be advised that many of the passengers on this bus may be visitors to a psychiatric center and a homeless shelter. Take the bus all the way to the south end of Randall's Island Park to the stop for the Charles Gay Center. Check www.mta.info for schedule information. From there walk south to the waterfront, and then turn right along the roadway, which circles up to the Footbridge. From there, continue north along the waterfront for a few blocks. If you are not familiar with the island, allow yourself some extra time, as signage is sparse and somewhat confusing.
By Bike/On Foot:
The easiest and most direct access point from Manhattan is the 103rd Street Footbridge. This connects to the East River Esplanade greenway, which runs from East 82nd Street to 120th Street, and is also easy to get to from First Avenue, which has a bike lane (turn right at 102nd Street for the footbridges). After crossing over to Randall's Island Park, turn left on the bike path (paved) or pedestrian path (gravel) and go north along the waterfront for a few blocks a few blocks to the race setup area.
Alternately, you can get to Randall’s Island Park from pedestrian ramps from all three spans of the RFK/Triboro Bridge, i.e., from Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. From any of these ramps, head toward the Manhattan side of the island and then south along the waterfront to find the race setup area. If you are not familiar with the island, allow yourself some extra time, as signage is sparse and somewhat confusing.
By Car:
All automobile access is via the RFK/Triboro Bridge. From Manhattan: If paying with E-ZPass at toll, stay left at toll plaza for the exit ramp to Randall’s Island, immediately after the toll plaza. If paying cash at toll: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, about a half-mile past toll plaza. From Queens: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, immediately after the toll plaza. From the Bronx: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, about a half-mile past toll plaza. Free public parking is available in various designated areas (map).
Please allow ample time to arrive at race check-in/start. Note that weekend disruptions to subway service are possible. Check www.mta.info for service advisories that may affect your trip. |
