GPS coordinates: 40.789447,-73.932289.
Directions to Check-in (GPS coordinates: 40.789447,-73.932289):
Randall’s Island Park sits between Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens. Access is via the 103rd Street Footbridge (pedestrians and bicycles only) or the RFK/Triborough Bridge (buses, cars, pedestrians, and bicycles). Island map with Aquathlon locations and parking highlighted.
By Subway:
6 to 103rd Street, then walk east along 102nd Street to the footbridge over the FDR Drive, which connects to the 103rd Street Footbridge. After crossing over to Randall's Island Park, turn left and go north along the waterfront for a few blocks.
By Bus:
The M106 bus, which goes across town from West 96th Street, stops two blocks north of the 103rd Street Footbridge. From there, it's an easy walk following the "On Foot" directions below.
The M35 bus serves Randall’s Island Park from the northwest corner of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue in Manhattan, which is right at the 4/5/6 subway stop and a block east of the 125th Street Metro-North Railroad Station. Take the bus all the way to the south end of Randall's Island Park to the stop for the Charles Gay Center. From there walk south to the waterfront, and then turn right along the roadway, which circles up to the Footbridge. From there, continue north along the waterfront for a few blocks. Check www.mta.info for schedule information.
By Bike/On Foot:
The easiest and most direct access point from Manhattan is the 103rd Street Footbridge from the East River Esplanade greenway. After crossing over to Randall's Island Park, turn left on the bike path (paved) or pedestrian path (gravel) and go north along the waterfront for a few blocks. Pedestrian ramps connect to the islands from all three spans of the RFK/Triboro Bridge, i.e., from Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. From any of these ramps, head toward the Manhattan side of the island and then south along the waterfront. If you are not familiar with the island, allow yourself some extra time, as signage is sparse and somewhat confusing. Island map with Aquathlon locations highlighted.
By Car:
All automobile access is via the RFK/Triboro Bridge. From Manhattan: If paying with E-ZPass at toll, stay left at toll plaza for the exit ramp to Randall’s Island, immediately after the toll plaza. If paying cash at toll: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, about a half-mile past toll plaza. From Queens: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, immediately after the toll plaza. From the Bronx: Stay right for the exit to Randall’s Island, about a half-mile past toll plaza. Free public parking is available in various designated areas (map).
Please allow ample time to arrive at race check-in/start. Note that weekend disruptions to subway service are possible. Check www.mta.info for service advisories that may affect your trip. |

Medals for all participants. | | Age Requirement: | 15 years and over (younger swimmers may be accepted based on swimming experience). | | Experience Requirement: | Safety concerns require us to ensure that every participant in a NYC Swim swim event has adequate swim experience; thus we have set certain qualifying standards for participation in each of our events. You may register for a NYC Swim event even if you have not completed a qualifying swim, and your enrollment will be approved upon verification of your qualifying swim details. It is your responsibility to submit qualification information. NYC Swim does not provide refunds or transfers for swimmers who are not approved to participate in an event.
The experience requirement for participating in the Stars & Stripes Aquathlon and Swim is as follows:
The completion of any
NYC Swim open water swim or Aquathlon
since January 1, 2009
--- or ---
--- or ---
--- or ---
Pool certification in a manner consistent with the sample template, which can be accessed on your user profile swimmer page, documenting the completion of a continuous 1-mile pool swim (1650 yards/1500 meters) in 45 minutes or better since January 1, 2011. To provide the best indicator of open water ability and a solid basis for comparison with other swimmers’ pool times, the pool swim should ideally be done in a deep-water, competition-length pool. [Where to do a pool certification swim] [How to upload pool certification]
All pool certifications and qualifying swim information must be received by NYC Swim at least 14 days prior to the date of the race (no later than June 25, 2011). Swimmers who enroll after June 25th must submit their qualification information to NYC Swim within 24 hours of enrollment. Participants' qualifications will not be accepted, reviewed or approved on race day. | | Predicted Water Conditions: | Approximately 64 to 73 degrees. Wetsuits/non-traditional swim attire may be worn but may affect a swimmer's eligibility for awards. The full wetsuit policy can be viewed here.
There can be a substantial amount of chop in the water from wind & tide action. The waterways are salt-water and there is shipping traffic. There may be random jetsam & flotsam in the waterways. | | Previous Year's Water Temp: | 70.70 °F (21.5 °C) on 07/09/2010 71.24 °F (21.8 °C) on 07/09/2009 72.86 °F (22.7 °C) on 07/09/2008 68.18 °F (20.1 °C) on 07/09/2007 64.22 °F (17.9 °C) on 07/09/2006 |
