Ederle Swim

On October 6, 2007 NYC Swim will present its second annual 17.5-Mile Ederle Swim. This swim recalls a previous era of open water swimming, allowing today's participants to navigate a course that few others have, and that was until recently, nearly forgotten. In 1925, Manhattan native Gertrude Ederle swam from the Battery in lower Manhattan to Sandy Hook, New Jersey in seven hours and eleven minutes, setting a record that stood until the summer of 2006. With today's knowledge of the tides, participants cover the course faster than when Ms. Ederle swam.

Continue walking west to the Esplanade along the Hudson River and head north to the North Cove Yacht Harbor. Please note that weekend disruptions to subway service are possible. Check www.mta.info for service advisories that may affect your trip. By Bus: Take the M9, M10, or M22 to Battery Park City. North Cove Yacht Harbor is in Battery Park City, on South End Avenue between Two World Financial Center and the Hudson River, outside of the World Financial Center�s Winter Garden. By Ferry: Direct from the Lackawanna Terminal to the World Financial Center or Pier A. For more information call (908) GO-FERRY. Directions to Race Start (Battery Park, Gangway 1): By Car: Take the West Side Highway (Henry Hudson Parkway/Route 9A South) to Battery Park. Parking may be available on the street on the east side of the West Side Highway. We strongly recommend public transportation. By Subway: Take the 1 to South Ferry, the 4/5 to Bowlilng Green or the R/W to Rector Street. Please note that weekend disruptions to subway service are possible. Fees:

Swimmer $1000 ($400 will be charged to the applicant's credit card and $600 cash must be presented by the swimmer to their boat captain on race day)

Awards:

Certificates will be presented at a ceremony following the completion of the event.

Age Requirement:

19 years and over (Younger swimmers may be accepted based on swimming experience).

Experience Requirement:

All applicants must complete and submit proof of a 3-hours or longer Qualifying Swim by September 1, 2007 in order to be eligible to participate.
Qualifying Swim includes:

2005, 2006 or 2007 finishers of the Manhattan Island Marathon Swim

2005, 2006 or 2007 finishers of the English Channel solo swim

2005, 2006 or 2007 finishers of the Catalina Channel Swim

Open-water swim that is that is 3 hours or longer in water that is 63°F, (17°C) or colder, completed between June 1, 2006 and September 1, 2007, without a wetsuit

If you have not completed a Qualifying Swim before your application is submitted, your application may be approved subject to the satisfactory completion of the Qualifying Swim, provided you submit proof of a Qualifying Swim before September 1, 2007.

NYC Swim will rescind the acceptance of any applicant who fails to submit proof of completion of their qualifying swim(s) by September 1, 2007. NYC Swim will not consider any incomplete applications for swimmers that do not include payment in full of the entry fee. Applicants who have their acceptances rescinded will receive a refund of all fees they have paid, excluding a $75 processing fee.

Predicted Water Conditions:

Seasonal Temperature 60/65�F (15/18�C). There can be a substantial amount of chop in the water from wind, tide action, and boat traffic. The waterways are saltwater and there is shipping traffic. There may be random jetsam and flotsam in the waterways.
