Brooklyn Bridge Swim

Swimmer enrollment for the Brooklyn Bridge Swim is now closed. We are still accepting enrollments for kayakers and land-based volunteers.

On September 8, 2007, NYC Swim will present the second annual Brooklyn Bridge Swim. The event will start on the Manhattan side in East River Park, swim parallel along the southern line of the Brooklyn Bridge then North, Northeast along the seawall of Empire-Fulton State Park to the beach in Brooklyn Bridge Park immediately prior to the Manhattan Bridge. This is a very challenging course, crossing the river rather than utilizing the tidal assist available in an event that runs upstream or downstream. Swimmers who are unable to complete the 1-km distance in the 45-minute time limit will be pulled by boat from the event. Based on our knowledge of the tides and currents, the equivalent swimming distance of this event is more like an intense 1.1 mile swim in a pool, but the time limit constraint remains the same.

After the race, all swimmers, volunteers, and their friends are invited to join the NYC Swim staff at Water Street Restaurant, 66 Water Street. It's just a short walk from the NY Water Taxi stop at Fulton Ferry and a great place to unwind after the swim. All attendees are responsible for paying for their own food and drinks.

Your registration for a NYC Swim swim is not complete until the NYC Swim receives acceptable evidence of your qualifying swim. The experience requirement for participating in the Brooklyn Bridge Swim is as follows:

The completion of any NYC Swim open water swim, Aquathlon or open water swim clinic within the past three years (2005 - 2007)
----OR---
Any DOCUMENTED timed open water swim race of 1.5 miles or more within the past three years (2005 - 2007)
----OR---
Any DOCUMENTED Triathlon with a timed 1.5 mile or longer open water swim within the past three years (2005 - 2007)
----OR---
Pool Certification in a manner consistent with the sample template, which can be accessed on your user profile swimmer page, documenting the completion of a continuous 2 mile pool swim in 1 hour and 30 minutes or better. Swim must take place in a traditional swimming pool; "Endless Pool" swims are not acceptable for qualification purposes.

Your pool swim must take place no earlier than March 1st of the current year, and all pool certifications and qualifying swim information must be received by NYC Swim at least 14 days prior to the date of the race (no later than August 25, 2007). Swimmers who enroll after August 25th must submit their qualification information to NYC Swim within 24 hours of enrollment. Participants qualifications will not be accepted, reviewed or approved on race day.
Predicted Water Conditions:Approximately 60 to 65 degrees. Wetsuits may be worn but may affect a swimmer's eligibility for awards. The full wetsuit policy can be viewed here.

There can be a substantial amount of chop in the water from wind & tide action. The waterways are salt-water and there is shipping traffic. There may be random jetsam & flotsam in the waterways.
