United States Volunteer Life-Savers Best Dangerous Eddies.

New York, Sept. 11.-People lined the Astoria River front today -watching the swimmers of the United States volunteer life-saving- corps tackling the Bell Gate eddies. There were 35 contestants in the race, who-started from the foot Of East Ninetieth street at 10:30 a. m., but only 20 finished at Clasons Point. John Murphy, a New Jersey life-saver, won the race. His time was 1. hour 33 minutes, with the Tide. Among those who finished were Bert Severino, Robert McKeon. John Hill, Winfield Sturges, Charles Muff, and Michael Mcdermott. The fifteen who gave up were hauled into the boats that followed the swimmers.
