Doubleheader on the Hudson Begins the Second Half of the Summer Swim Series

NEW YORK, N.Y., July 16, 2005 --- Kamel Tejeda, 17, from the Dominican Republic, won both the Race for the River and Cove to Cove Swims, on Saturday, July 16, 2005. His time for the 2.4-mile Race for the River was 36.09; his time for the .50 mile Cove to Cove Swim was 7:44.

RACE FOR THE RIVER: Second and third place in the men's division went to Sean Hannan, 19, of Clifton Park, NY, who finished in 38:58, and Gilles Chalandon, 48, of New York, NY, with a time of 39:13. Top three overall finishers in the women’s division were Rondi Davies, 35, of New York, NY, who finished in 37:52, Jennifer Hand, of Metuchen, NJ, who finished in 39:57, and Kara Fichthorn, 24, of Brooklyn, NY, in 43:28.

Swimmers started from Hudson River Park’s Pier 62 in five separate waves at 11:00 a.m., and finished at the North Cove Yacht Harbor in Battery Park City.

COVE TO COVE SWIM: Second and third place overall went to Thayer Thompson, 30, of New York, NY, who finished in 8:24, and Gilles Chalandon,, 48, of New York, NY, with a time of 8:39. Top three overall finishers in the women’s division were Stephanie Kubicek, 15, of Brooklyn, NY, who finished in 10:00, Maddalena Mustillo, 25, of Union, NJ, who finished in 10:07, and Paola Espitia, 26, of Sleepy Hollow, NY, in 10:31.

Swimmers started the south-to-north swim from the South Cove at 2:15 p.m., and made their way along the seawall to the finish at the North Cove Yacht Harbor.

Swimmers represented the states of California, Colorado, Connecticut, the District of Columbia, Illinois, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Utah, Virginia, and Washington, as well as the Dominican Republic, Chile and Japan. Swimmers ranged in age from 14 – 76. Many participants swam both races. Water temperature was approximately 73-76°.

The Race for the River and the Cove to Cove Swims are organized and sponsored by the Manhattan Island Foundation (MIF), Hudson River Park Trust, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation, Battery Park City Parks Corporation and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
